We all own a lot more clothes than we need. Many are impulse buys, worn a few times at best then thrown in a corner of our closets and eventually in a landfill. And we continue buying clothes that we don’t need because lifestyle magazines tell us trends have changed and fast fashion companies make it cheap for us to stay up to date. This happens over and over again. It’s a vicious cycle that uses up a lot of limited resources unnecessarily and creates huge amounts of pollution and waste.
The Fashion Circle initiative exists to give you the option of breaking that pattern. Right now we think a good way to do this is through clothes swapping. It helps you get rid of the stuff you don’t wear, it can be a lot of fun and it doesn’t cost you a thing.
The idea of clothes swapping is not new or revolutionary. Even here in Singapore, there are occasional swapping get-togethers organised by people on forums or in malls around town.
What we want to do is to bring people interested in clothes swapping and based in Singapore together in a community with a permanent online presence and regular offline events. Then use this platform to get more people interested in clothes swapping and grow our community. Then have a stronger online presence and more and bigger offline event. And so on. We want to swap the vicious fashion circle for a positive Fashion Circle.
And we want everyone involved to have fun. So we developed a few simple swapping rules for our offline events to give the process flexibility and make it easy for everyone. Click here to see what they are.
There are two sides to the Fashion Circle platform, online and offline, both equally important:
This site, together with the Fashion Circle Facebook page and Twitter account, is a place for us to gather. Here you find information about clothes swapping, the fashion industry and the waste it creates and how to reduce it. You can also see details about upcoming events and register your participation here. New members can join our community on this page.
This is where the actual clothes swapping happens and we all get to know each other as well. We are planning to organise these events regularly, about 3-4 times a year for now, maybe more as the community grows. Whenever details are confirmed for the next event we will let everyone now about it through the online platform, email updates, etc. You can then register and show up on the day to have a bit of fun and a fresh wardrobe. Details of our next event are here.
“Why would Etrican want to start this? As a clothing brand shouldn’t you encourage people to buy more clothes, not less?”
We choose to encourage people to buy better, more responsible clothes, not more of them. As a brand focused on being eco friendly, we are the first to admit that there is too much waste in the fashion industry. Simply put, our message to you is buy less clothing and when you have to buy, choose pieces that are better for yourself and the environment, like the ones we design. If you look at it this way, Fashion Circle completes the work Etrican does. And with your help we would like to grow the two side by side.
Fashion Circle is a non profit initiative and we want to keep it so. Which means we have limited resources available to make it grow . So we could really use your help. How you can help, you ask?
- Spread the word
- Join our community and start clothes swapping.
- Create content for our online platform
Tell everyone about this initiative. Our Facebook page is here, our Twitter account here and there are social media buttons all over the website. Use them. The bigger the community the more impact we can have.
We all have clothing lying around that we’re not really using. Keep an eye out for our next event, grab snapshots of yours, register and become an active part of our community.
Do you enjoy writing, are you a graphic designer or maybe you enjoy researching articles on meaningful topics? Help us maintain an active and vibrant community on this website and on our social media pages by creating relevant and interesting content. Email us at email@example.com and tell us what you can do.
These are just some ideas of how you can help. You may have others, for example you may have access to a great location for a Fashion Circle event, you may be a photographer who can create wonderful shots of the events or you may simply be interested in volunteering for what ever is needed. Every little bit helps so we want to hear from you. Send us a message at firstname.lastname@example.org and let’s start talking.
